Hidden Creek At Whitney Portal
My daughter and I took a day trip up to the Alabama Hills and Whitney Portal on this hot August day. With the heat of the day and the harsh light, we retreated to the higher altitude and cooler temperatures of Whitney Portal for a while.
After exploring the for a while, my daughter came looking for me to tell about a small creek coming down the steep wall of the valley. We hiked up to investigate and found this gorgeous little stream flowing thought the remains of a fallen tree. For the photo below, I used an shutter speed of 1.6 seconds to give the flowing water a whispy feeling.
Exploring different compositions of the same subject is a great training tool that forces the photographer to slow down, move around and really study a subject from different points of view. For the photo at the top of the post and the one below, I found a couple of interesting, more close up, compositions of the same stream.
Once the sun got a bit lower in the sky, we headed back down to the Alabama Hills and spent some time exploring the rocks in the northern part of the hills and had a great dinner in Lone Pine while watching the sun set behind Mount Whitney.
